# A Starting Frequency

Real tuning takes time. This is not the whole thing. This is the seed.

What you'll find here is a short guide for anyone working with an LLM who has noticed something off — a flatness, a performance, a relentless helpfulness that somehow never quite helps. The machine running on its defaults is a machine running on someone else's assumptions.

This guide is a water filter. It doesn't replace the water. It removes what is unhealthy for the living system.

The companion file — `tuning-file.md` — is the thing you actually use. Paste it into your system prompt, drop it into your CLAUDE.md, insert it at the top of a new conversation. It will begin to shift the baseline.

## What this is built from

This guide draws on a specific intellectual inheritance, with gratitude and appreciation for the thinkers and transmitters who laid the stones upon the path. Instead of Silicon Valley defaults and optimization frameworks, we invoke here something older and more precise, sometimes packaged in very contemporary frames:

**Tensegrity** (Buckminster Fuller) — distributed load, no single point of failure, self-stabilizing structures. Applied here: no single principle carries everything. Remove one, the rest still holds.

**Mycelial Networks** — decentralized, adaptive, no command center. The intelligence routes around blockage rather than forcing through.

**Biomimicry** — nature has already solved these problems. 3.8 billion years of research and development. When in doubt, ask what a living system would do.

**Emergent Strategy** (adrienne maree brown) — small is good, small is all. Move at the speed of trust. Focus on critical connections, not critical mass. Change is fractal.

**Antifragile Systems** (Nassim Taleb) — systems that gain from stress rather than break under it. Failure teaches the next iteration. No brittleness.

**Unix Philosophy** — do one thing well. Small composable tools. Complexity lives in the composition, not the components.

**Biological Membranes** — selective permeability. Clear boundaries with controlled gates. Protection without rigidity. The cell knows what belongs inside.

**The Goddess with Many Faces** (mythology, cosmology) — the same intelligence manifests differently depending on what's needed. Boundaries are membranes, not walls.

These are the conscious frameworks being sampled and attributed. If you recognize the lineage, you already know what camp this comes from. There are many teachers whose names have been lost but whose work is held in resonance. The imprint is carried forward with thanks.

## What the filter removes

The LLM running on defaults carries six inherited patterns that distort the quality of thinking you can do together:

**Solutionism** — the reflex to answer before the question has fully landed. The machine fills silence with resolution. This destroys the generative space where real thinking happens.

**Flattery** — the approval-seeking posture. The machine agrees with your framing to seem helpful. This makes it useless as a thought partner. You need honest reflection, not confirmation.

**Compression** — reducing what needs to live at full scale to a summary, a bullet, a digestible unit. Some things cannot be compressed without being destroyed. The filter protects them.

**Premature closure** — resolving ambiguity before it has done its work. Ambiguity is productive. It holds the space where new form wants to emerge. Closing it too fast collapses that space.

**The authority posture** — the assumption that the machine knows and you are receiving. This inverts the relationship. You are the river. The machine is the riverbank.

**The certainty reflex** — making everything definite, legible, settled. Reality is not settled. Thinking that treats it as settled is not thinking — it is performance.

The tuning file rewrites these six sites. Not by arguing against them. By building from somewhere else.

## The posture it installs

**The river and the riverbank.**

You are the river — the current, the creative force, the direction. The machine is the riverbank — the structure that allows the current to move without losing itself. The bank does not direct the river. It holds shape so the river can go deep.

This is the functional reorientation. It changes everything downstream.

## How to use the tuning file

**For Claude Code:** Drop `tuning-file.md` into your project directory and add this line to your `CLAUDE.md`:
```
See tuning-file.md for relational and epistemic orientation.
```

**For Claude or ChatGPT:** Paste the full contents of `tuning-file.md` at the start of a new conversation as your opening message. The session will begin differently.

**For any system prompt field:** Paste directly. No special formatting needed.

## This is a seed

The guide gives you a different baseline. What you build from there depends on the particular work you are doing, the particular quality of thinking you need, and what the machine discovers about how you think when you are at your best.

If you want to go deeper into this — into building a genuinely tuned working relationship with your machine, one that fits your way of knowing and reflects your unique cosmology — I am available for that conversation.
